The Spanish Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and the Environment, Isabel García Tejerina, presented the Spanish Climate Action Platform, an outstanding contribution by Spain to the Global Climate Action Agenda, which aims to promote public-private partnership in the global fight against climate change.
The platform has the strategic participation of EIT Climate-KIC Spain, which has promoted the creation of this platform as a key partner for the development of innovation and entrepreneurship in the fight against global warming.
In fact, one of the objectives of this platform is to involve public and private entities in Spain in the global action to combat climate change in order to drive the implementation of the Paris Agreement and to advance towards a carbon neutral and resilient economy, and to consolidate an innovative and competitive economy in Spain that demonstrates its leadership in climate actio
In this sense, the general manager of Climate-KIC Spain, José Luis Muñoz, said during the presentation at the Ministry of Climate-KIC Spain, that “these new ways of public-private cooperation allow us to transform talent into innovative products and services at the citizens’ disposal and at the same time tackle climate change with new economic and employment opportunities”. So, “addressing climate change is an opportunity to mobilize the talent that exists in Spain through innovation and entrepreneurship in climate action,” added the director of EIT Climate-KIC Spain during his presentation.
José Luis Muñoz has highlighted the role of EIT Climate-KIC Spain in the creation of this platform because it shares the same working criteria and, through the innovation pyramid,” we are the amalgam that brings together companies, academia, research and public bodies, in order to identify and create innovative solutions that address climate challenges”.
The platform is a collaborative initiative between the Spanish Office for Climate Change (Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, MAPAMA), the Spanish Group for Green Growth, the Spanish Global Compact Network, ECODES and EIT Climate-KIC Spain as a strategic partner for innovation and entrepreneurship.
A pioneering initiative in Europe
During the Bonn Climate Summit (COP 23), the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Patricia Espinosa, welcomed the creation of this initiative as a pioneering initiative on climate action at the international level. Since then, a large number of administrations, companies, organizations and individuals have shown their interest to join the platform.
Entities that want to be part of the Platform should join the Comunidad #PorElClima. They must establish quantified emission reduction targets and they have to report on their compliance. Secondly, they must enter their carbon footprint in the Ministry’s Carbon Footprint Register. Thirdly, it will apply to join the NAZCA platform of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The Platform establishes a framework for public-private partnership to catalyze climate action in Spain and contribute to the United Nations Global Climate Action Agenda.
